Questions

Everything you might be wondering

How does online therapy work?

We meet by secure, HIPAA-compliant video at a scheduled time, just as we would in an office, only you join from wherever you feel most comfortable and private. You get a link, click it at your appointment time, and we talk. Most people find it feels natural within the first few minutes.

Is telehealth therapy actually effective?

Yes. Research consistently finds that virtual therapy is comparable to in-person care for anxiety, depression, and trauma. For many people it is actually easier to open up from their own space, and removing the commute makes it far more sustainable to keep going.

Can I work with you if I live in a different city than you?

Absolutely. Because sessions are virtual, you can work with me from anywhere in Maryland, Virginia, or Utah: a major city, a quiet suburb, or a rural area. What matters is that you are physically located in one of the states where I am licensed at the time of our session.

Is virtual therapy secure and private?

Yes. Sessions are held over secure, HIPAA-compliant video. I ask that you join from a private space where you won't be overheard, and I treat everything we discuss with the same confidentiality as in-person care.

What technology do I need?

Very little: a phone, tablet, or laptop with a camera, a private space, and a reasonably stable internet connection. If tech ever feels like a barrier, we sort it out together.

Do you take insurance?

It depends on your state. In Maryland I'm in-network with Aetna, Optum, United Healthcare, Oscar, and Oxford. In Utah I'm in-network with Aetna, Optum, United Healthcare, Oscar, Oxford, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. If you're using insurance we can verify your benefits together, so you'll know what sessions will cost. If you're paying out of pocket, you can check with your insurer before we get started to get an idea of what they'll cover. In Virginia I work on a private-pay basis and can provide a superbill you submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

What are your rates?

My fee is $145 for a 50-minute session, and the first 15-minute consultation is free. If you plan to use out-of-network benefits, I can provide a superbill on request.

How does payment work?

Payment by card is due at the time of session.

Do you provide a Good Faith Estimate?

If you are paying out of pocket, I provide a Good Faith Estimate of what your care is expected to cost, in compliance with the No Surprises Act.

What should I expect from therapy?

Sessions are 50 minutes long, and generally I meet with people once a week, though depending on circumstances I might recommend we meet more or less often than that. We explore what you're struggling with and how to help you move forward. I'm here to help you make your own decisions and feel empowered to make your life into what you want it to be. If you aren't sure whether therapy is for you, I'd encourage you to at least give it a shot.

How long will I need therapy for?

Ultimately that's your call. I've worked with people for as short as a couple of months and as long as a couple of years. You and I can talk about what's working for you and come up with a plan together.

Do you do in-person sessions?

No, we always meet by secure, HIPAA-compliant video. Because my license is state by state, you do need to be physically in a state where I'm licensed for the duration of the session.

What if I can't afford your full fee?

For clients with financial need who are paying out of pocket, not using insurance, I have a couple of sliding-scale spots available from time to time. Ask me about it when you reach out.

What if I'm not sure therapy is right for me?

That's completely normal, and it's exactly what the free 15-minute consultation is for. There's no pressure to commit to anything. We simply talk, see how it feels, and figure out together whether working with me is a good fit.
